THE EXPLORATION OF BAMBOO FOR DESIGN

(The exploration of bamboo for design)希望能將竹的美好再度帶入日常生活。

This project aim to re-introduce the beauty and usability of bamboo into daily life. From design perspective,we explore the relationship between daily life and bamboo craft. By seeking new lights out of bamboo-craft techniqe, we utilize insights to explore and simplify the way we create. Result in a serie of objects which are useful, can be easily produce, but also remain the warm quality of carft.

Pavilion is a display unit with bamboo weaving panels as backing to display treasured collectibles. With the changeable panels, Pavilion not only shows the beauty of bamboo weaving craft, but also provides a flexible way for people to interpret their own collectibles in display.

Pavilion inspired by traditional Asian curio. We tried to change this traditional form glossary into a new style with more a simple and concise appearance. We also added the backing element to this curio to enhance the experience and the possibility of display. With different types of pattern and colour of bamboo weaving, the panels turned out to have different functions (the bulls eye pattern attracts visual focus to highlight the collectibles) and visual effects.

The frame of panels can be attached to the shelf by magnets, therefore people can change the pattern, position and the number of panels. In this design, we try to deconstruct the elements of pattern and offer the possibility to create different patterns by overlying panels. Through this way, we can simplify the process of weaving and provide a more flexible way for collectors to use. Thus, create a more customized piece with rich possibilities.

Forest is the cone shaped copper mirror constructed by bamboo weaving structure. With its special shape, it can form a unique table landscape and give the user an interesting using experience.

While learning the technic of bamboo weaving, we found that the possibilities of bamboo weaving lie not only in the patterning and graphical aspect, but also in the structural aspect: bamboo weaving can be used as a structure due to its flexibility and strength. From this point of view, we used bamboo weaving to construct a cone shaped object, which is both dynamic and static. When it stands up it stays in a static position, when it lays down it rolls with motion. This feature gives the object a playful characteristic.

We tried to utilize this into our daily object and to create different experiences while using them. The mirror and the cone shaped bamboo weaving structure are the perfect match, the cone shape fits the way we use the mirror and the texture of the bamboo weaving enhances the haptic feeling, we also applied a copper/brass board to the mirror to match to the texture and the feeling that bamboo weaving brought us - natural and delicate.

Cross is a standing lamp constructed by module bamboo loops. By the mixture of light and shade, we give a new interpretation to the traditional bamboo bending technic within the modern object. By overlapping and staggering the bamboo loops, the layers interestingly form positive and negative spaces within the object creating detailed effects of light and shade.

Another aspect of this object is the complexity of the structure. With all the lines of the bamboo special visual effects are created that differ depending on the angle you look at the object from. Apart from the design aspect, we considered the manufacturing aspect as well. By using the module of bamboo loops, we can create the significant visual effect through only four types of bamboo loops making the manufacturing process more precise and simple.

More than usual, less complexity. “More than Less” is a design team form by four designers studied in National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Including Yi Chen Chen, Cheng Shiun You, Ya Han Chou, Tang Ni Chien. From 2015, we started to explore the possibilities of bamboo as design material. This project is supported by National Taiwan Craft Research and Development Institute.
